Denny and Sandy

Denis Carl Wampole was born on October 10, 1943 at the Grandview Hospital in Sellersville, PA.

He grew up in Telford, PA, and also lived in R.D. Green Lane, PA.

Denny has 2 brothers.  Alan and David.  Denny was the middle child between the two brothers

For school, Denny went to Souderton for grades 1-3.  In 4th grade he started at Salford Hills and stayed there until grade 7.

 4th grade

There was a time when Denny was young that he, and his brother, Alan, were home.  Alan was telling Denny that he was Cornwallis, and he defeated to Washington.  Denny did not care for this.  They argued back and forth, then it got a little more physical.

(Now, their front door was an upper pane of glass and a lower pane of glass. )

Somehow, during the physical confrontation, Denny ended up breaking the lower pane of glass in the door.

Denny's family raised goats.  They milked them, sold the milk and made cheese and butter out of the cream.  The family did not go away very often, due to needing to care for the goats.  One day, the family went on a day trip.  When they got back home, it was raining.  The goats were wet!  Their parents did not want the goats to get pneumonia, so they took them in the house and toweled them dry.  After drying about 10 goats, there was not a dry towel in the house.

This farm was more of a hobby than a profession.  His father always had another job in addition to this.

In school they had show and tell.  One day, Denny decided he wanted to bring Ruby, the goat, in for show and tell.  His mother got Ruby to school and got to show off his goat.  I'm sure he (besides his brother) was the only one to ever bring in a goat for show and tell.

 7th grade

8th through 12th grades were at Souderton.

 8th grade

During Denny's school years, he and his brother Alan would have fun on days they had school and there was snow on the ground.  To get to the bus, Denny and Alan would ride a sled to the bottom of the hill.  Then they would hide their sled, get on the bus and go to school.  After school, the bus would drop them off, they would get their sled, put their books on the sled and pull it up the hill.

 9th grade

Denny has been a life long animal lover.  At one point he found some baby red squirrels.  He brought them home and bottle fed the babies.  He ended up building something to keep the babies safe.  When he released them the squirrels made a new home in a tree nearby.

Sandy has always been an avid reader.  As a young girl, when told she needed to vacuum a bedroom, she would have the vacuum running and she would sit and read her book while only cleaning a small area carpet in front of her.

How We Met-July, 1967
After I graduated from nurses training in August, 1965, I worked at Grand view Hospital for the following two years 3-11 shift.  By June of the second year, I was ready for a change.  About this time Donna Jantzi was planning to move back out to Arizona and she asked me whether I would be interested in moving out with her.  This seemed like just the thing I was looking for  I handed in my resignation, promising to work until the second week in August.

One evening during the last week in July, the 26th to be exact, I was doing my usual work at the desk, when I saw this handsome guy step off the elevator.  He had a nice grin and I thought to myself, "now there's a good looking fellow!"  He was at the hospital to see his dad, who was on our floor at the time.  Well, he walked down the hall and I continued on with my work, until I was interrupted once more by the same fellow.  He asked if he could borrow a pencil.  I told him,  "I  believe I had one I could spare." So I gave him one, and he went back to his dad's room with it. (I found out later that he stuck it in his pocket.) In five minutes, he returned it.  He introduced himself as Denis Wampole and that is how it all began.

This happened on a Wednesday evening, just after I had gotten back from a 4 day weekend.  Consequently, I didn't have any evenings off until the next Thursday.  That's when we had our first date, August 3, 1967.  We went to the Barn Cinema to see "Hawaii."  We had a nice time then, and all our dates to follow.

However, my plans were still made to go to Arizona in September, and after a lot of thought and prayer about it, I decided to go as planned.  We decided that if our friendship was meant to last and develop into anything more, it would in spite of our being apart.  It was a hard decision to make, and came to leave in September when the time came.

So for 10 months we wrote letter after letter, week after week, with only one 3 week break in January when Denny flew out to Phoenix to see me during his vacation.

In July, he flew out again, this time to bring me back home with him, where I belong!

While Denny was in Arizona visiting Sandy, they went to a concert.  After the concert, Denny was driving and he got pulled over by the police.  Confused, because he had not done anything wrong, he pulled over and talked to the officer.  Apparently, Denny had been a courteous driver when they were trying to leave the parking lot.  The officer had seen this and gave him a Courteous Driver Award.

When Sandy was leaving Arizona to move back to Pennsylvania, the girls she worked with knew that she was getting serious about this fellow.  The girls got her a small going away gift.

It wasn't long and Denny and Sandy were engaged.

They had a bridal shower,

And a wedding soon followed.

The day of the rehearsal for their wedding, Denny tried to hold Sandy's hand.  Sandy said, "No!" and pulled her had away.  The day of the wedding it was Sandy who grabbed Denny's hand.

They honeymooned in Gettysburg, but it was only for a short time.  They needed to get home to get back to work.  About a year later they took a trip that involved staying with Sandy's parents, and also her brother Glenn, while going to Niagara Falls, and the St. Lawrence Sea Way.  They stayed in a tent on campgrounds.  The trip took about 2 weeks.

Prior to getting married, when Sandy moved back to PA, she lived with her Uncle Horace.  He had a job at the local bank.  Denny got to know Sandy's aunt and uncle over the time that they were dating.  When they found out that Denny was going to build a house Uncle Horace told Denny to come down to the back to get the loan he needed.  So, after they were married and starting on the house, Denny went to the bank.  The loan officer denied him the loan because he was going to build the house himself.  They had a meeting that afternoon, and Denny got a call saying that he was granted the loan.  He feels sure that Uncle Horace had something to do with that.

When they started building the house, Sandy's job was to take pictures to document the process.  One day it was really hot and humid.  Denny's friend came over to help pour footers.  He had brought over sever quarts of beer.  They were doing their work, and enjoying their beverage.  Then here came Sandy down the lane to take pictures.  They hid their beer (poorly) as they later found out that the tops of the beer bottles were peeking out of their hiding spot in the picture she took.

Mike recalls, "One day Mom was getting really frustrated with us boys.  She said, 'Your walking on...' and instead of saying thin ice, she ended with 'sinking sand'"  (Sandy we think of this story every time we sing this hymn in church.)

Chris says, "I do remember one time dad planned a little getaway for just the two of them and had arranged sooner to babysit for us overnight. He didn't tell mom. She actually was supposed to go into work the day they left, but dad didn't tell her that he has already arranged for her to have the day off. She was actually dreading going to work that day, and dad let her start to get ready for work and everything, and then he finally told her she didn't have to go and they were going away. She was so happy she was crying."

On June 28, 2016 Denny and Sandy were able to come to Virginia to be at Adam's baptism.

Somehow we did not get a picture of Denny and Sandy with Adam.  But I found this picture of that day.  I love that this picture unknowingly shows characteristics of Sandy and Denny.  Sandy with her camera, ready to get some pictures, Denny chatting with his oldest son.

Most of Denny's career was spent doing maintenance oriented type work.  Denny's interests and hobbies include his motorcycle, wood working and repairing anything.

Sandy's spent many years working as a nurse at the Souderton home.  Her interests include reading, quilting, puzzles, and volunteering.

Denny and Sandy have had 50 great years together.  Their marriage has been filled with fun, family, and love.

You are truly an inspriation to us, and we hope you have many more years together.
